![]() McKinney ISD Mentoring Event Press Release January 18th 2010 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE January 15, 2010 Olympian Michael Johnson to Address McKinney ISD High School Students about Importance of Mentors Hundreds Gather from Around the District to Commemorate National Mentoring Month McKINNEY, Texas – More than 900 students and mentors in McKinney ISD will gather together to hear a powerful message about mentoring by Olympic Gold Medalist and World Record Holder Michael Johnson. The program, which commemorates National Mentoring Month, will be held on Tuesday, January 19 at 10:30 a.m. in the McKinney Boyd High School auditorium. The program is being coordinated by the McKinney ISD Partners in Education Program and is aimed at promoting the importance of mentors in the lives of young people. The inauguration of National Mentoring Month began in 2002 and has been endorsed by former President George W. Bush and, more recently, by President Barack Obama. General Colin Powell has served as a vocal spokesperson for the effort. The McKinney ISD Partners in Education Program is responsible for developing the REACH mentor program. The program matches mentors with McKinney ISD students and encourages mentors to volunteer one hour per week during the class day in support of his/her mentee. The program has experienced exponential growth since its inception in 2006, but school officials say the demand for mentors has always exceeded the number of volunteers. Currently, the district has approximately 300 mentors. “At the moment we have around 30 students that are still in need of a mentor,” said Nancy Cowlishaw, McKinney ISD Partners in Education Coordinator. “We are experiencing more and more interest in the program, and our local businesses and community have demonstrated a commitment to the program and our students. Every day we hear heartwarming stories about the impact a mentor has had on his/her mentee.” Michael Johnson, a Dallas native and a vocal advocate for mentoring, is partnering with the district by providing an inspirational message to students and mentors. The message will focus on mentors who impacted his life, and the importance of being a mentor to others, regardless of your age. In addition, staff from the Michael Johnson Performance Center will serve as mentors as part of the center’s commitment to the McKinney ISD Partners in Education Program. “I share the district’s belief that educating a child is a community project,” Johnson said. “When I was growing up in South Dallas, I was lucky to have the love and support of an amazing family, but I also had great mentors – teachers, coaches and others in the community – who were dedicated to helping me achieve my full potential.” Michael Johnson will be available for media interviews prior to the event. We encourage members of the press to arrive no later than 10:00 a.m. Please check into the main office at McKinney Boyd High School, 600 North Lake Forest Drive, McKinney, Texas 75071. About Michael Johnson Michael Johnson won four Olympic Gold Medals and was crowned World Champion eight times in his professional track career. Johnson currently holds the world record in the 400 m and 4 x 400 m relay and formerly held the world record in the 200 m and Indoor 400 m. His 200 m time of 19.32 at the Atlanta Olympics stood as the record for more than 12 years. He is the only athlete in history to win both the 200 m and 400 m events at the same Olympics, a feat he accomplished at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Johnson is also the only man to successfully defend his Olympic title in the 400 m. In addition to his Olympic success, Johnson accumulated eight gold medals at World Championships, and is thus tied with Carl Lewis for the most medals won by any athlete in history. Johnson was noted for his unique running style. His stiff upright stance and very short steps defied the traditional wisdom stating that a high knee lift was essential for maximum speed. Johnson is widely considered to be amongst the greatest sprinters to grace the track and the greatest 400 meter runner of all time. Since Johnson’s retirement from competitive track and field in 2001, the athlete-turned-entrepreneur has used the training and competition philosophy he developed during his career to guide today’s superstars and the next generation of athletes through his eponymous sports management company and the renowned Michael Johnson Performance Center. Founded in 2007, the Michael Johnson Performance Center is a state-of-the-art sports performance training center at Craig Ranch in McKinney, Texas. The center, sponsored by Nike, helps both aspiring youth athletes and elite/professional athletes reach their athletic potential by improving speed, power, agility, strength and conditioning. One of the center’s signature programs, its annual NFL Combine Preparatory Camp, has helped more than 50 top draft prospects prepare for the NFL Scouting Combine, including Ladainian Tomlinson, Tony Romo, Roy Williams, Eli Manning, Alex Smith, Mark Colombo, Felix Jones, Michael Crabtree, Michael Oher and Knowshon Moreno.
